Is Your Lipstick Safe to Eat?
Do you know that if you use lipstick, you are consuming some 4 to 7 pounds of lipstick in your lifetime?
Lipstick will never go out of style. It's that one piece of make up which outsells every other type of make up and even women who don't usually use make up will have some lipstick on hand!
Trouble is, every time you lick your lips or eat, you’re ingesting your lipstick.
Commercial lipsticks are potentially harmful because of the synthetic colours used. D&C colors (drug and cosmetics colors) give an amazing spectrum of colours in lipstick — but the colours are approved by the FDA for food, not cosmetics!
The FDA guidelines for approved synthetic FD&C and D&C colours concern only their lead and arsenic content. There are no guidelines for their allergic or carcinogenic properties.
Since the early 1990s, Paul Penders has stopped using artificial colours in all products.
Synthetic colors aren't the only problem.
Many commercial lipsticks are a witches' brew of petroleum-based chemicals. Special-feature lipsticks contain certain chemicals and minerals to create their effects: bismuth compounds are used for giving that pearly sheen, silicon oil keeps the lipstick on your lips longer and mica particles gives a glittering effect. And don’t forget synthetic fragrances and artificial flavours for scent and taste.
These items are not deadly poisons like lead, but companies selling these lipsticks need to test them for allergies and other side effects, and that of course means animal testing (which we at Paul Penders are strongly against!).
It's a vicious cycle of health and ethical issues, all of which can be avoided simply by switching to natural organic lipstick. While producers of natural organic lipsticks can’t possibly produce the range of colours that can be obtained with synthetic dyes, these organic lipsticks can still help you look good without threatening your good health.
Paul Penders has a natural cream lipstick range with a variety of natural hues to complement any skin tone. Check the Paul Penders lipstick shades here.
